Our journey, so far

Since launching a gofundme earlier this year for help paying for the high cost of applying to medical school, I have felt endlessly supported by family and friends, and that has been so important to this whole process.

There are a few things that need to be done to get a medical school application up to snuff. In the broadest strokes, these things are gaining experience in the field, doing volunteer work, and conquering that beast of all beasts, the MCAT. In the last month or so I have been focused on that first task of getting work in the healthcare field and I’m happy to report that I have succeeded and have been hired by ScribeAmerica as a Physician Scribe.

My job is to follow physician’s around and write their notes for them so that they can focus on patient care. This exposes me to many medical disciplines, shows me the day-to-day work of a physician, and helps a ton in getting familiar with medical terminology and language as well as the physician’s thought process.

This is kind of a big deal. Also, it turns out, I frigging love my job. I love being in the clinics. Every minute of it, every patient interaction. I love it. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about the work of doctors. I’d never seen a doctor work, outside of my own patient visits. But after 2 days I know that I need to be one of these people. I need to be a doctor.

So what next? Here’s the plan moving forward:

  • Get good at this scribing thing
  • Find enjoyable volunteer work
  • Start reviewing for the MCAT

The MCAT review is pressing. I’m gathering a list of materials to go over all of the content that may be on the test, but it is, uh, pretty pricey. If you’re feeling generous, you can click on the ol’ gofundme link to the left there. Every bit helps!

Anyway, I’ll keep you posted. We’re doing this. IT’S HAPPENING.

Love,

(The someday) Dr. Unicorn, MD.
